Senate President Pro Tempore Larry Walker (SD-20) (R) and Danny Mathis (HD-133) (R) announced Sept. 23 that the state will put up to $600,000 toward new hangars at Cochran Airport in Bleckley County, a project estimated at $800,000. The money comes through the Airport Aid Program, the City of Cochran is providing the remaining $200,000 as a local match, and the Georgia Department of Transportation is preparing a contract with the city.
Walker called the investment “another example of our commitment to strengthening the infrastructure that keeps rural Georgia competitive.” Mathis said the new hangars will support the local economy and the aviation industry.
Bleckley County is part of Walker’s district. His colleagues unanimously elected him president pro tempore on Jan. 12, and he presides over Senate sessions when the lieutenant governor is absent. He has represented the 20th District, which covers Bleckley, Dodge, Dooly, Laurens, Pulaski, Treutlen and Wilcox counties and part of Houston County, since 2015.
