The new breaks would replace, not add to, other homestead exemptions, and county and school taxes each need their own yes.

Macon-Bibb homeowners 85 and older would owe no county or school property tax on their homes if voters approve two questions on the Nov. 3 ballot. Younger seniors would get smaller breaks: $17,000 off the taxable value of their homes for residents 65 to 74, and $32,000 off for residents 75 to 84. The exemptions start with 2027 tax bills.

One question covers county taxes and the other covers school taxes. They use the same age tiers, and each needs its own yes.

Seniors would apply once with the tax commissioner and keep the exemption each year while they live in the home. The new exemption replaces any other homestead exemption on the same taxes instead of adding to it.

Mayor Lester Miller recommended the change in 2025. The Mayor and Commission asked the county’s legislators to write it. “After five straight years of millage rate reductions, we continue to look for ways to help out the people of Macon-Bibb County,” Miller said.

Early voting runs through Oct. 30 at the county Board of Elections office, the Elaine H. Lucas Senior Center and the Theron Ussery Park Community Center [1].
