Georgians will go without the state’s 33.3-cent-a-gallon gas tax through Nov. 30, after Gov. Brian Kemp (R) extended its suspension on Oct. 24. His office said the extension covers the Thanksgiving travel period.
Kemp suspended the tax on Sept. 28 for 30 days, starting at 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 29. The diesel tax, also suspended, is 37.3 cents a gallon. Earlier orders under the state of emergency also suspended state weight limits on commercial vehicles and penalties for using dyed off-road diesel on roads.
Kemp said in a statement that he took the step “to keep more money in Georgians’ pockets” with fuel prices still high. His office announced the extension in consultation with Lt. Gov. Burt Jones (R) and House Speaker Jon Burns (R).
When it announced the extension, the governor’s office, citing AAA, put the average price of regular gas in Georgia at $3.66 a gallon and diesel at $5.72. It said regular was about 63 cents below the national average and diesel about 61 cents below.
